MOS was founded in 1965, and incorporated on 25 June 1969 as a non-profit corporation. It is an affiliate of the American Orchid Society (AOS) and the California Garden Clubs, Inc. There are currently about 250 active members.

Meetings are held the third Tuesday of every month (except December) at 7:00 p.m. at the Pacific Palisades Women’s Club (901 Haverford Ave, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272.  They include a short session on orchid culture, and a main speaker. Members can choose to have dinner with the speaker before the meeting. After the main presentation there are refreshments and judging of orchids that members have brought in for display. There is a silent auction and a raffle with a large array of desirable orchids. Members can confer with the experts and borrow books from our extensive library.

MOS is an award-winning participant in the annual Santa Barbara International Orchid Show and the Southland Orchid Show. Members design and execute the displays and lend their plants for these occasions. We also hold a very successful annual orchid auction, open to the public. There is an annual organized overnight bus trip to see special collections and nurseries in areas outside of Los Angeles and a day when selected MOS members welcome visitors to their greenhouses and outdoor orchid gardens. In addition, members have a marvelous summer party, as well as a festive holiday banquet each year.

Members receive the informative MOS bulletin monthly, which lists topics for the next meeting, the plant forum ribbon awards, informative articles, calendar of Southern California orchid shows and events, and other items of interest to orchid lovers.
