With the increasing use of computers, the resultant volumes of data traffic has increased the requirement to transfer data at higher speeds and this is where Category 6 cables become important. A lot of communications systems use high performance cables generally consisting of four pairs or more that typically contain two twisted pairs transmitting data and two receiving data along with probability of four or more pairs multiplexing in both directions.
Certain standards have been developed to specify a number of performance categories which establish needs for different operating features of a cable. A high performance standard for 100 MHz cable is ISO/IEC 11801, Cat 5. Furthermore, more strict standards are being put for implementation for higher frequency cables which includes Category 6 and Category 7 having frequencies of 200 and 600 MHz, respectively.
Cables use high quality pairs having been produced for use in communication local area networks with a maximum frequency of 100 MHz which is known as Category 5 cable. The development of the Category 6 standard in succeeding wide recognition by the industry itself has raised the transmission needs for the electrical signals in telecommunications cables to higher levels.
A cat6 cable should be able to meet needs for cable impedance and return loss, signal reduction and stoppage, crosstalk, etc. Cat 6 is a performance categorization for twisted pair cables, connectors and systems that is particular up to 250 MHz. A category 6 cable is usually considered a high performance cable and, as such, return loss and crosstalk needs may be mostly strict.
