19th World Orchid
Conference
The 19th WOC was
held in Miami, Florida from January 22 to 26, 2008. Fourteen
hundred (1400) participants from 40 countries and 46 states
participated in a conference rich with stimulating lectures,
world class exhibitions, and 70 orchid vendors from around
the world. World class speakers offered 72 lectures running
concurrently on three tracks: Horticultural, Scientific, and
Conservation.
One of the
conference highlights was the Keynote Address given by Dr.
Phillip Cribb. Dr. Cribb’s talk was quite stimulating as he
described the latest advances in colloborative research and
his perspective on the scientific quest of plant
classification research. Alfredo Manrique of Peru presented
an informative talk on the successful cultivation and
hybridization of Phragmipedium kovachii. The size of the
Phragmipedium kovachii flower is approximately 5 - 6 inches.
Several MOS members
attended this impressive conference and will share the
cultural information and latest scientific breakthroughs
that were presented at the conference with the Malibu Orchid
Society and guests. Georg and
Gerlinde Stelzner will present a narrated slide
show of the many exquisite orchids and exhibits displayed at
the show, and a trip to the orchid growers in Homestead,
FL. Jill Marti will
give a recap of Dr. Cribb’s talk.
Dr. Birute Vileisis will talk about Phrag.
kovachii, and Barton Mozlin
will talk about his experience at the conference. If you
couldn’t make it to Miami, come to this delightful evening
to hear our members share with you highlights of this
amazing world gathering of orchid hobbyists.
The Plant Opportunity
Table will be purchased from Orchid Fever.
