February 2008 Thanks are due to Alice Hall and Linda Zamelsky for presenting an informative talk on Orchid Photography at the January meeting. Many of the attendees of the 19th World Orchid Conference followed their recommendations and the society will be the beneficiary at the February meeting. This year, the 63rd Annual Santa Barbara International Orchid Show will be held from Friday, February 28 through Sunday, March 2. This is our most important show of the year. Over the years, the MOS has won many trophies for its display and our members have won numerous ribbons for their plants. Sylvia Morton is this year’s Show Manager. We need good plants for display and volunteers to help install and disassemble our display. See Sylvia’s insert for details. If you have not already done so, sign up at our next meeting or call Sylvia. Our Annual Plant Auction will be held on Tuesday, March 18, at the Pacific Palisades Women’s club. This is our principal fund raising event. Coral Rugge has solicited the vendors at the Santa Barbara Show for their donations. In the past we have been offered wonderful plants, especially from nurseries from out of state who do not want to ship them home. If you have plants (good plants!) to donate, please do so. Otherwise, be sure to attend. This is a great opportunity to buy good plants at bargain prices. The Fascination of Orchids show in Orange County on February 6 through 10 was a great success. It was a large show, with many plant vendors and beautiful displays. If you have not attended this show, be sure to put it on your calendar for next year. Thanks to all of you who attended Bill Marshall’s memorial. Bill was a member of the Society for many years and was known especially for his large and excellent collection of epidendrums. And last, once upon a time, a member donated a trophy to be given each year to The Best Outdoor Grower. The trophy was lost for several years, but has finally been found. We hope to be able to give it to last year’s winner, the Stelzners, at the February meeting. Grafton Tanquary |
